Agree Todd, a second is pretty underwhelming especially if we’re retaining salary. Perhaps we can retain 75% of his salary and get a 1st? |

I believe the max you can retain is 50% but you could take back a contract of a throw in player to save Carolina more money and give them cap room.
A second is underwhelming. I'd want a first even if it means us adding (like a 4th rounder going back). |

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, that was my point....we take a big financial hit that really has no detrimental impact to our cap space so we can get the best possible return. |

I was surprised Lebrun's estimate of a 2nd was so low as well, especially if the devils are retaining salary.
Would it feel better if it was the Rangers' 2nd rounder instead of Carolina's? - BINGO!
No trades with our bitter rival. Hard pass! |

Canes have Rangers' 2nd this year... |

If they can get a first then run with it. I posted before while I'm more apprehensive trading some of our forwards, no one on this D has proven they're 100% worth keeping and they need to reshape this unit. |

On a team that is desperate for some Defense help, Damon Severson stands alone. Maybe he has some Offensive ability hidden in there somewhere, but he is a lifetime -105!!! You can add all the other defensive guys on the roster together, and his +/- is twice as bad ! If the Devils can get a second rounder for the Sieve, they should do it and try to keep Vats around. ... Actually they should try and get anything for him.....maybe a package deal ? |

This is the exact reason why +/- shouldn't exist. |

I agree, only a 2nd round pick is very underwhelming and if that’s the return I’d lean towards resigning him. He’s a right shot that can log a good amount of minutes and play all situations. Not saying it needs to be a massive haul but if he can’t get anything worthwhile then why trade him? |

For a second I would pass. Rather keep him. Carolina has two firsts. One for 1/2 price Sami or no deal.

Max is 50% and the most you can have is two retained salaries. We retained on Hall so the next one is the only one we are going to be able to retain on for this deadline. |

He wouldn't last 10 games in Philly. He is way too soft. |

10 games is more than what the average 7th rounder plays. |

I dont understand the logic of keeping him because the offers are underwhelming. If you have no intent on signing ( and we shouldnt because he gets injured, will ask for too much and we have young kids that need to learn) get anything for him. A 5th round pick is better than letting him walk for nothing. |

2nd rounder only? pass!
unless, Vatanen's UFA rights goes back to New Jersey after their playoffs is over? Then that would be a PURE rental. don't think the NHL would allow it |

Todd, what else can we package along with 50 off sami to get Tor to bite on Kapanen coming back? Ceci, check! A conditional pick if Vats does not resign, what else? |

The depth of this draft is likely going to limit 1sts moving. Who might get a 1st? Kreider? Maybe. Non rentals like Tatar ? Maybe. But expecting more than a second for most rentals is unrealistic |
|

I would be fine spiting other teams by not trading him at all if the offer is just their late 2nd AND salary retained. |

That's fine and most of us get it. But I see no reason to do a solid for a team looking to make a run and just give up anything for him. They can kick sand. |
